History of a Collection

Made possible by a variety of bequests (mostly from Monsignor Pasquale Macchi, personal assistant to Paul VI), the collection of the Associazione Arte e Spiritualità is continuously enriched by donations and acquisitions. It was opened to the public in 1988 and, until July 2009, was housed inside a building located in Via Monti in Brescia.
About seven thousand works: this is the enormous legacy of the Paul VI Collection - Contemporary Art. Here we find the unquestioned protagonists of Italian and international 20th century art: Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Erich Heckel, Oskar Kokoschka, Gino Severini, Mario Sironi, Giorgio Morandi, Felice Casorati, Georges Rouault, Jean Guitton, Emilio Vedova, Hans Hartung, David Hockney, Lucio Fontana, Giò and Arnaldo Pomodoro and others.
